Network Scale Up MethodThis method allows population size estimates using indirect measures of respondents’ social networks. A social network is a set of people that a person knows; this set of people is, on average, representative of the general population in which respondent live and move.
The technique consists in asking people about problems indirectly, i.e.: problems that in principle are not regarding him or her directly, asking instead on how many people he or she knows with specific characteristics. The network scale-up does not require the key population to report on its own highly stigmatized and sometimes illegal behaviors or “sensitive” issues.
